Elvira, Mistress of the Dark

One of my childhood crushes ;-)

20 minute sketch

Come to Mystery Sketch Theater!

Reminder that if you are a local artist in the Orlando area, you should check it out Mystery Sketch Theater. It's the first Wednesday of every month at A Comic Shop (in the UCF area, near Full Sail). It's only 5 bucks to draw (but bring a little bit extra to tip the model ;-)

New November Sketchcards!

The Dark Queen from Battletoads

Kala the Neutrino from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Monsters Love Mallorie

This piece was done about a year ago, but, for some reason (cough *computer crash *cough*), I lost the original photoshop file. After doing some snooping around on my back up hard drives, I came across it! It's a pic of my Facebook friend, Mallorie, and her love for monsters!

Hope y'all enjoy!

Dragon*Con vs Comic Con!

Ever wonder which con is better to go to: Dragon*Con or San Diego Comic Con? Well, this article is pretty spot on in pointing out the pluses and minuses of each con. Personally, I'm a Dragon*Con fan myself! It just seems more "fan oriented" to me. I mean, three years ago at the con, I was sitting at a bar and RIGHT to my left was Adam West!

Anyways, take a look at the article and decide for yourself:

No one else is the same...

Another drawing that has just been sitting in my computer for months until now!

Yes, again, I must confess my secret love for Jem! ;-)

Starfire!

The Purr-fect Woman

Copic marker sketch of Catwoman (Jim Balent style)! It's based on the purr-fect cosplay of Tantrim Costumes. You can check out her work here:

One thing that I have had problems with as of late is drawing liknesses to people. It's was like someone had hit the off switch in my head and just shut down the ability to do it in my head. I'm not sure if it was some sort of mental block or just lack of focus, but it was impossible. The remedy to that was Dragon*Con! Seeing so many beautiful costumes and so many people just embracing a culture that they truly love has to be one of the most inspiring things ever. Being able to see and meet so many artists and childhood heroes face to face just instantly gave me the drive to want to do better.

Ever since I came back from the con, i have been on a drawing frenzy (as you can see lol). I've been trying to focus more on drawings related to peoples likenesses (hence all the pics of cosplayers lately), just so I can get back into the daily grind of things and, potentially, get some real work accomplished. :-)

Hopefully, you have been liking the new pieces! Many more to come! :-)

The Maleficent BelleChere

Gray marker sketch of the marvelous BelleChere as Maleficent (J. Scott Campbell style) from Sleeping Beauty. Let me tell you that seeing this costume in the flesh at Dragon*Con was one of the highlights of the con for me. Truly amazing and probably one of the best crafted costumes that I had ever seen in person.

To see her spectacular cosplays, check them out here:

Dragon*Con 2011!

Dragon*Con never fails to disappoint in awesomeness. After having not been able to go last year, I made double to effort to make sure that I would be there for the 25th anniversary of the con. TO say that it was nuts would be an understatement. There were people EVERYWHERE! Not only that, but, at one point, I literally counted 1 out of every 7th person to be in some sort of costume!

The best part about the con is that it gives me the chance to meet and hang out with so many Facebook friends from all over. Cosplayers such as Riddle, Marie-Claude Bourbonnais, Kearstin Nicholson, and BelleChere and fellow pin up artists Amano Jyaku and Scott Blair were just a few of some of the uber-talented people that attended the con.

While I was up there, I managed to get a few drawings in while relaxing in the hotel room:

Mystery Sketch Theater 8/3/11

Here are a few sketches from last Wednesday's Mystery Sketch Theater event at A Comic Shop. I hadn't been in a couple of months, so it was just nice to be able to get back into the groove of things (or, at least, attempt to). I'm not too happy with how they came out, but I guess its a good thing that I was actually able to do SOMETHING, right? Also, in my lack of drawing recently (also known as laziness, in some states), several of my copic markers have started to give up on me! Looks like it's time to head to the ol' art store for the season and do some serious shopping. *sigh* So, so much to do and work on....

You know what I need? A montage! ("Even Rocky had a montage....")

Oh, and Dragon*Con is almost here! Damn skippy!

Lady Two-Face

Lady Two-Face, inspired by the amazing cosplay of Meagan Marie. This piece was done with a combination of warm and cool grey copic markers.

Amy Winehouse 1983-2011

On a more dismal note, it saddens me to hear about the death of Amy Winehouse. My good friend, Maxx, turned me on to her music a few years ago before she hit it big here in the states. Her music and soulful styling have inspired me oh so many times. Rather it be during a simple drawing session or just a long car ride after a hectic day, Winehouse's music just had a way of capturing a soul and just telling it to " just relax". Back to Black is probably one of the few albums that I can listen to from start to finish on repeat and never get tired of it. She was just that damn good! Say what you want about her outside antics and tumultuous personal life, but you can't deny the sheer amount of talent and presence that woman displayed in her music. Without her, the world might not have been given the proper chance to embrace newer international talents such as Adele.

Addiction is a powerful thing and not something that should ever be taken likely. The inner demons of the soul are a powerful thing to deal with and overcome. It's truly heartbreaking to see that the world has lost yet another gifted young talent to pressures of stardom.

May you rest in peace, Amy Winehouse.

"Back in the game, baby!"

It's been a busy time these past couple of months and, unfortunately, none of it has been art related. Between health issues and moving, it just feels like any type of productive work has been pushed to a screeching halt. My drawing hand is just itching to get back into the swing of things. I have tons of new ideas that I have just been waiting to try to put on paper, but, between all of the personal life craziness mentioned above, i just haven't been able to make anything work. Here's to hoping that once the final box is unpacked here at the new place, things can go back to normal!

The Marvelous Mary Marvel

A Copic marker sketch of Mary Marvel. Haven't done one of these in a while, so i'm a bit rusty. Not only that, but the copics are starting to die a bit too. Looks like it's time for ol' Chris to just suck it up and get a fresh new set. LOL!
